Dustin Ousley
Artistic Director
Dr. Dustin Ousley is the newly appointed Director of Choral Activities at Charleston Southern where he conducts the Concert Singers and Singing Buccaneers. He was born and raised in upstate South Carolina (Fountain Inn/Simpsonville). He received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Choral Conducting from the University of South Carolina in August 2015 where he served as the conductor of the USC Women’s Chorus (2013-2015). Prior to moving to the Charleston area, Dustin served as both Adjunct Instructor and Director of Choral Activities at Coker College in Hartsville, SC. For seven years, Dustin was the choral director at Fred T. Foard High School in Newton, North Carolina. He received a Bachelor of Arts in music from Furman University in 2003 and a Masters degree in Choral Conducting from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2005. At the college level, he has taught classes in ear training, music theory, music appreciation, conducting, music education methods, rhythmic analysis, and applied voice. He is also serving in his second year as Artistic Director of the Sandlapper Singers, a semi-professional choir based in Columbia, SC. He most recently served as choir director at Shandon Presbyterian Church in Columbia, SC.
Dustin is in frequent demand as a choral clinician on both the middle and high school levels, having conducted nearly thirty county and district wide honor choruses in the Carolinas. He has enjoyed preparing and/or conducting several major works over the years including Vivaldi’s “Gloria,” Schubert’s “Mass in G,” Faure’s “Requiem,” Howells “Sir Patrick Spens,,” Brahms’ “Ein Deutsches Requiem,” Rutter’s “Requiem,” and Handel’s “Messiah.” Dustin also has extensive experience in stage performance and as a vocal soloist, having performed in over fifty musicals/operas over the years; most recently, he played the title role in “Candide” for Opera at USC. He has served as tenor/baritone soloists for USC Summer Chorus, Shandon United Methodist Church, and Florence Masterworks Choir. This season, he will serve as the tenor soloist for the Singers of Summerville performance of “Requiem” by Dan Forrest. He enjoys being married to Lee Ousley of Florence, South Carolina–an accomplished classical singer and voice teacher—and being father to their children, Brooks and Mae, and poodle, Addy.
