Even in the darkness of winter, light illumines the nights. From candles in windows to the blinking lights of storefronts, the darkness is scattered by light. So, too, our song can light the darkness and bring forth a new dawn. Come hear familiar sounds of the seasons and new heartwarming selections. Dustin Ousley returns as a guest conductor.
The concert is sponsored by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of SC. The Sandlapper Singers are funded in part by the South Carolina Arts Commission which is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Two years ago, the Sandlapper Singers were preparing to perform Forrest’s Requiem for the Living when the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted most aspects of our lives. Now, after two years of pandemic, racial reckoning, and disruptions throughout our lives, performing a Requiem focused on the those who have lost loved ones has more meaning than we could have anticipated. We present this concert with the combined forces of the Sandlapper Singers, Charleston Southern University Concert Singers, and a chamber orchestra. The concert and its focus on consolation for the living is the vision of Dr. Dustin Ousley, Artistic Director of the Sandlapper Singers, and Director of Choral Activities at Charleston Southern University. The Sandlapper Singers opens the concert with American spirituals that lift up the need for hope and resilience in times of adversity and the importance of supporting each other as we rebuild and recover. The Charleston Southern Concert Singers will perform a complementary set raising the voices of the next generation. The choirs join to present the emotionally engaging and lyrically stunning Forrest Requiem as the centerpiece of the concert.
Dan Forrest is a South Carolina-based, internationally-renowned composer whose “Requiem for the Living” has been presented all over the world since its premiere in 2014. A Requiem, at its core, is a prayer for rest – traditionally, for the deceased. The five movements of Dan Forrest’s “Requiem for the Living,” however, form a narrative just as much for the living, and their own struggle with pain and sorrow. The Sandlapper Singers are thrilled to share the stage with the Charleston Southern University Concert Singers and chamber orchestra accompaniment to present this glorious masterwork!
The Friday, April 22 concert will be Dr. Ousley’s final concert with the Sandlapper Singers in Columbia. At the close of the concert, we will introduce the new Artistic Director of the Sandlapper Singers who will conduct Moses Hogan’s arrangement of Abide with Me which we are making a tradition for incoming Artistic Directors.
